Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to audition to join?
- Yes. After we receive your application, our conductors will be in touch to arrange a short, friendly audition so we can understand your playing level and find the right part for you.
- What level of guitar playing is expected?
- We welcome classical guitarists with a working foundation in note-reading and fingerstyle technique — roughly ABRSM Grade 5 and above, or equivalent self-taught experience. Players of all backgrounds are welcome to apply; we care most about your commitment to ensemble playing.
- Do I need prior Niibori ensemble experience?
- No. Many of our members were new to the Niibori Method when they joined. We will guide you on the different Niibori instruments (prime, alto, bass and others) and help you settle into the part that best suits your strengths.
- What instrument should I bring? Are Niibori guitars provided?
- Bring your own classical guitar for the audition. For rehearsals, specialty Niibori instruments (alto, bass, contrabass, guitarrón) are typically shared within the ensemble — we will discuss arrangements once you join.
- How often does the ensemble rehearse?
- We do not maintain a fixed weekly rehearsal schedule. Instead, parts are assigned individually in advance, and members are expected to prepare their own parts through focused self-practice before meeting. In the lead-up to a concert, we typically hold two to three ensemble rehearsals to consolidate coordination, balance, and musical interpretation. These sessions are used to align ensemble playing rather than to learn individual parts. Consistent self-preparation is therefore essential to the success and quality of the ensemble's performance.
- Is there a membership fee?
- We collect a modest membership contribution to cover rehearsal venues, scores, and concert production. Exact fees and concession arrangements will be shared with you during the audition and onboarding process.
- How long does it take to hear back after I apply?
- Our conductors review every application personally. You can usually expect a reply by email within 1–2 weeks.
